The Beginnings

Founded in 2013 (as Lost Horizon Brewing Company - few people know), it was in 2014 that I finally started brewing in my own brewery.
It was now named the Buddelship Brauerei, located in a beauitful old canned fish factory building in Hamburg-Stellingen.

Things moved rather fast at first and by 2018 we have gotten some addional space and there were now 5 of us working hard
to brew exciting beers and compete in a more and more tight market.

There was already for a while the idea in my head to move out of the hustle of the city to a more relaxed place where
there was no pressure on space and rent, and me an my partner Nienke have been actively looking for a farm since 2019.
There was also already the idea to venture into a more experimental world of brewing - and distilling, by establishing
a farm and producing there.

In May 2020 things finally came to an end in Hamburg. We have been forced out due to the owners plans to take it down and
build something that makes more profit. Well - COVID came about in full force as well and we all know what happened.
We moved brewery and warehouse to a temporary home in a port storage, and soon became gypsies like so many other people
in this market, except that we I had a brewery. Just not a brewery location.

That was to change then when in October 2020 we have found a farm that fit our profile, about 1.5h outside Hamburg.

After brewing just about everything you can find in the book of beer styles, and also a fair share of barrel aged beers,
I wanted to move things forward and focus more on barrel aging and wild fermentation, in addition to the prospect of
making Ciders and hopefully soon some very interesting botanical Stouts.

And of course there will be fantastic distillates from Nienke, with a focus on products from our own fruit orchard,
botanical spirits, as well as our very own Lost Horizon Whisky.

It is time for the lost horizon brewing and distilling project, a farmhouse brewery and distillery where we can grow
our own fruits, grains, and botanicals, and focus only on the wild side of things.
